Those lucky souls who’ve had their kitchens professionally photographed know the magic an interiors stylist can bring to a space they thought looked pretty good to begin with.
Holly Keeling used a few tricks of the trade when designing her new kitchen, making her guests think they’ve stepped into the pages of their favourite magazine.
Holly Keeling’s stunning home is a detached Georgian style farmhouse with large rooms and lots of unusual features. Soon after moving in Holly set about planning her new kitchen. “I knew I wanted a country style kitchen with lots of storage space and some freestanding pieces to add character”.
Holly was unfazed by the space she had to work with, which was dark and every wall uneven. A staircase had to be removed before work could commence and the floor levelled before the limestone tiles could be laid. The French windows were opened up and a new window was knocked through ensuring Holly now has a wonderfully light kitchen.
A black four oven Aga provides the kitchen with a real focal point and adds an instant country feel. An attractive batterie de cuisine is fitted above the Aga with an open shelf above that, on which a few of Holly’s favourite objects are displayed.
The central island unit was another key feature. Holly contacted a local cabinetmaker to build a butcher’s type table, which has drawers on either side and is open below providing lots of space to store large bowls and the bread bin. It is painted in soft green with a maple worktop giving a real country feel.
A traditional Belfast sink was fitted beneath the window adding to the style of the kitchen. Open shelves housing storage jars and crockery create a friendly feel and ensure the space remains light. Holly included three pull-out baskets which further enhance the country kitchen feel of the room.
Holly was keen to keep the palette for her kitchen pale and calm. She chose to pick out the central butcher’s table and a single wall unit in muted green while the rest of the units are cream and beautifully match her SMEG fridge. Worktops of juperana granite compliment the paint colours and round bun handles of dark wood really provide the finishing touch ensuring the end result is a kitchen with a strong country style.
